"And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave." 1 Kings 19:12,13
That which creates fear and doubt in us might also be the same thing that creates courage and trust. Elijah had reason to believe that God was "with him" by virtue of Mt Carmel a few days earlier. There Elijah knew courage and trust. However, under the broom tree and in the cave he knows fear and doubt after the threat of wicked Queen Jezebel to hunt him down and kill him.
Elijah had been with God on Carmel and seen God confirm his faith. What would drive a man to run from a woman who hurled insult and threats when you've been with the Almighty just a short time before?
It's called "focus" and it can happen to anyone. Perhaps today you've lost your focus. You've known God's power and have been secure in your position in Christ but today you're just not confident.
God asked Elijah a simple question that day, "What are doing here?" After confirming His presence and power to the prophet, God had Elijah's focus once again. It was then that the prophet confessed his feelings of solitude and fear. Deep down, Elijah perhaps was afraid that he might not be able to repeat his Mt. Carmel "faith" the next time God called on him.
What do you see today? Do you see your own ability or do you see God's ability? Will you act today on the basis of your ability or God's ability to live through you? Listen, did you hear that? I thought I heard a whisper; "My power is made perfect in your weakness - not your strength or ability." (Cp: 2Cor 13:9,10)
