"This is what he showed me: The Lord was standing by a wall that had been built true to plumb, with a plumb line in his hand. And the Lord asked me, 'What do you see, Amos?' 'A plumb line,' I replied. Then the Lord said, 'Look, I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel; I will spare them no longer.'" Amos 7:7,8
How many times has Israel been judged by God for their disobedience to only be restored later? I'm not sure, but one thing is certain; God seldom allowed His people to wonder while they wandered. Like this vision to Amos, God freely told his prophets why His people were being judged.
To this day, God holds a righteous standard to plumb. It has never changed or diminished. That standard is the word of God and it is the basis by which everything is (and will be) judged.
If you've ever watched a mason work, you've probably seen a plumb line and a level used. The mason knows true vertical must be visible in order to build a proper brick wall. So before he sets the foundation, he establishes a standard: true horizontal and vertical. This allows him to compare every course of brick with the standard.
Is not the word of God like a plumb line to our lives? Before we lay out plans for the day, we compare our direction with the standard of God's word. Then, as we journey, we stop and compare our progress with the standard. Are we still plumb?
The plumb line works by reason of gravity, which has a constant effect on everything on earth. As long as gravity exists, the plumb line will exist. It is the same way with the word of God. As long as God exists, his word will exist and be a faithful plumb line.
