Read the Bible through in OneYear

"For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds victory in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones." Prov 1:6-8

We call George Washington the Father of our Country. As commander-in-chief during the American Revolution, statesman and President, Washington exemplifies a just man. Proverbs says that God guards and protects the just and George Washington's life was proof.

Washington was 23 years of age during the French and Indian war and colonel of the Virginia militia. He and 100 buckskins aligned with the British to fight the French and the Indians. While the enemy waited in treetops and behind rocks, 1,300 British and American troops advanced in full view or their enemy, making for "easy" targets.

After only two hours, 714 of the 1,300 British and American troops had been shot down while only 30 of the enemy had been shot. Of the 86 British and American officers in the conflict, Washington was the only officer remaining on horseback. The rest had been shot down. Several horses had been shot out from under him too, but Washington had not been harmed.

The next day Washington wrote a letter to his family and said, "By the all powerful dispensations of Providence, I have been protected beyond all human probability or expectation." He wrote this letter after discovering four bullet holes in his clothing. Somehow, the bullets had missed him.

Fifteen years later, an old Indian chief traveled a long way to meet Washington who was returning to the battle site with a close friend. Sitting by the fire, the chief told the men that he was leader of the Indian warriors years earlier. He said, "I have traveled a long and weary path that I might see the young warrior of the great battle. I am come to pay homage to the man who is the particular favorite of Heaven, and who can never die in battle." When Washington asked the chief what he meant, the Indian told this story:

As leader of many warriors, the chief had instructed his braves to fire at officers before enlisted men. The chief confessed that he had personally fired at Washington seventeen times without success. He concluded that Washington was under the care of the Great Spirit and instructed his warriors to stop firing at him.

God truly does guard and protect the just. Aren't you glad? Just Thinkin'.. WebServant
