"Gideon replied, 'If now I have found favor in your eyes, give me a sign that it is really you talking to me.'" Judges 6:17 Most of us know the story of Gideon's discussion with the angel of the Lord. The angel appeared to Gideon one day at work and called him to do a mighty work. To put it in modern terms, Gideon gave the angel the "third, fourth and fifth degree". To the casual observer, Gideon appears to be a man, not only of extreme caution, but one who questioned God to the point of showing disrespect. The disciple called Thomas, also demonstrated similar caution. When hearing that Jesus had appeared to his friends after the crucifixion, Thomas wanted proof that Jesus was alive. Many regard his actions as "doubt", but a careful consideration of the facts when Jesus appeared to him, prove that his words did not offend Jesus. (Cp John 20:24-29) Both Gideon and Thomas went on to be faithful witnesses and mighty men of God. Their lives should encourage those of us who often ask God to make His way known to us more plainly. When caution however, becomes procrastination, it's another matter all together. Jonah is another man who questioned God. He demonstrated it however, by running away, not by waiting for God's answer. (Cp Jonah 1:1-3) His life testimony reveals that disobedience is not acceptable to God any more than procrastination. God's Word tells us that He expects his children to use careful discretion before acting; "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given him." James 1:5 It's curious that those with caution are most often criticized by those who don't exercise it. Will we be like Gideon, Thomas or Jonah? Or are will we be like the "wiggly" worms of 2 Tim 3:7 - always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth? Just Thinkin'.. WebServant
