Saul was able to hold his anger just so long. His hatred for David was intense and seemingly known by everyone except Jonathan, his son. David and Jonathan were good friends and pledged to remain so as long as they lived. Saul, however, hated David and sought to kill him, no matter how long it took. There are three wrong responses to resolving conflicts; blaming others, defending actions and holding in anger. It's amazing that we can act like everything's cool on the outside, but on the inside, a volcano is erupting. The only question is what will set it off and when it will blow. On this day, Jonathan proved to be what stirred the molten fire within his father and led to a volcanic eruption. "You're David's friend. I know it. Everyone knows it. You love him more than me. Here I am, trying to protect your throne from the one who wants to take it from us. Why don't you hate him like I do? What's that? You want to know why David must die? Here - try and catch this spear with your head." (paraphrase of 1 Sam 20:27-33) It's amazing that some people consider there is no difference between peace and unity. I contend that there's a notable difference. We can experience peace while holding a spear in our hand, but when we're unified, we don't feel the need to hold a spear. That day, Saul kept his spear close to him and acted like he was a peacemaker for the sake of those around him. But inside, Saul had his spear aimed at the door where David might appear. The point is, it's impossible for us to be at peace with God and not also be unified with him. But when we act like everything's ok, even when it's not and don't trust those around us, we're an accident waiting to happen. You may have heard this story, but it bears repeating; In a heated discussion with his parents, a disobedient child was told to sit down and be quiet. Finally, after losing a stare down contest, the child reluctantly sat down, but said, "I may be sitting down on the outside, but I'm standing up on the inside!" There my friend, is a perfect illustration of a person holding in anger rather than resolving conflict. It looked like peace on the outside, but there was no unity in the room. "Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for anger resides in the lap of fools." Ecc 7:9 (1) Scripture comes from the Holy Bible,
