Read the Bible through in OneYear

"Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes, with your right hand you save me." Psalm 138:7

There were plenty of men in Israel with battle experience and trained in hand to hand conflict. One would think that any one of them would stand and defend the honor of God and country. But, that was not the case. Even King Saul, who was head and shoulders taller than anyone else in Israel, would not take the challenge of Goliath, the Phillistine champion. Enter David, a little shepherd boy.

David brought food to his brothers on the front line. The youngest of Jesse's sons, David was given the responsibility of watching sheep while his older brothers served in Saul's army. David was a lightweight, ruddy, handsome and a proficient musician. His weapon of choice was a sling and a rock and his normal adversaries, wild animals. The shepherd boy was not very impressive compared to a nine foot tall giant holding a sword as long as David was tall, a javelin, spear and shield.

There were two anointed kings in Israel at that time, but Saul should have been the one to step up that day, not David. Saul was a coward and God's blessing no longer rested on him. It did however, rest on David even though it seemed he was too young, too small, too inexperienced and too impetuous to be a threat to Goliath. History records that God's anointing overcomes His biggest enemy for "the battle is the Lord's". (See 1 Sam 17:47)

Centuries later, the apostle Paul wrote to the church in Corinth explaining how God's power can be displayed through a weak vessel:

"But he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." 2 Cor 12:9,10

David knew what Paul and every other believer should know. When God gives the victory to a weakling, there is no question where the power originated or who gets credit for it. That should be a great comfort to weaklings with Goliaths in their life.
