David was a shepherd, a king, a musician and a warrior. We read in scripture that God considered him to be a man after His own heart. Yet, few people were as wicked as David when he set his heart on doing evil. For sure, David was a man of contrasting character and consistent behavior. He knew how to sin, but he seemed to always seek God's forgiveness.

The book of Psalms gives an inside look at David's heart. One need only look there in passing to see emotion of every type. But it's not just David that you see there. You'll also see God from David's perspective - and, if you look closely, you'll see yourself.

Perhaps that's why Psalms is one of the most read books in the Bible. It's a book that defines our experience so well that we could have written it ourselves.

So, what was David's secret? No one character quality defines him, but in chapter 5:1-3, we get an up close and personal look at David's power source:

"Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my sighing. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray. Morning by morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; morning by morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation."

Did you see it? That's right! PRAYER defines David's life more than anything else. From early morning to the time he laid his head down at night he was praying. Those Psalms written by David can best be described as a personal prayer journal.

Do you meet God each and every morning and then throughout the day? If so, does God walk with you? Does He answer your prayer? Does He teach you? If so, maybe you should consider writing your own prayer journal for those who come behind you.
