God called David a man after his own heart, but many times David demonstrated anything but holy character. At the end of his life, David looked back and thanked God for his loving grace and mercy. While he would not be permitted to build the house of God, he was given the privilege of charging his son with the job. Listen to David's advice to Solomon, his son:

"Now, my son, the Lord be with you, and may you have success and build the house of the Lord your God, as he said you would. May the Lord give you discretion and understanding when he puts you in command over Israel, so that you may keep the law of the Lord your God. Then you will have success if you are careful to observe the decrees and laws that the Lord gave Moses for Israel. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged."1 Chronicles 22:11-13

Solomon is remembered for his prayer asking God for wisdom to lead the people of God as their king. Scripture indicates that Solomon's request, which came after David's death, may have actually been a result of his father's prayer some time earlier.

All too many times we as parents, falsely believe that we are unable to influence the spiritual condition of our children. This father charged his son with righteous responsibility, planted holy desire within his heart and gave his him a blessing that was granted long after he was gone. Should those of us with children and grandchildren do any less?

The only excuse for not praying in advance for our family is ignorance, laziness or unbelief. Now you know. That leaves only laziness or unbelief. You claim to be a believer? That leaves laziness.
