"Gideon replied, 'If now I have found favor in your eyes, give me a sign that it is really you talking to me.'" Judges 6:17 Most of us know the story of Gideon's discussion with an angel. The angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon one day at work and called him to go do a mighty work. To put it in mildly, Gideon gave the angel the "third, fourth and fifth degree" desiring to be blessed. To the casual observer, Gideon appears to be a man, not only of extreme caution, but one who questioned God to the point of showing disrespect. The disciple called Thomas, also demonstrated similar caution. When hearing that Jesus had appeared to his friends after the crucifixion, Thomas wanted proof that Jesus was alive. Many regard his actions as "doubt", but a careful consideration of the facts when Jesus appeared to him, prove that his dessire for evidence did not offend Jesus. (Cp John 20:24-29) Both Gideon and Thomas went on to be faithful witnesses and mighty men of God. Their lives should encourage those of us who often ask God to make His way known to us more plainly. When caution however, becomes procrastination, it's another matter all together. God's Word tells us that He expects his children to use careful discretion before acting; "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given him." James 1:5 It's curious that those with caution are most often criticized by those who don't exercise it. Are our desires like those of Gideon and Thomas or are e like the "wiggly" worms of 2 Timothy 3:7; Always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth? Just Thinkin'.. WebServant (1)
