Read the Bible through in OneYear

"I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one that comes after me". Ecclesiastes 2:18

Most people believe workaholics are a product of this century. Solomon worked very hard for his worldly possessions. And aren't his words in Ecclesiastes indicative of a selfish attitude? In verse 21 of the same chapter, he notes that inheritors of material possessions don't work for what they get.

We laugh when a bumper sticker reads, "I'm spending my children's inheritance". On the other hand, why is it that we believe it is our job as parents to leave material possessions for our children after we die?

As a parent, do you think it's a wise decision to reduce the amount of work your children must do in order to survive? Then, is it the right thing to do to reduce the degree your children must depend on God after your death?

Solomon probably left his children the greatest amount of wealth ever known to man. In spite of this fact, his children forsake God, divided the house of God, sought to destroy each other and failed to honor God with their inheritance?

Possessions are not evil, but Solomon's question is a good one. Why are we so concerned about them when all they do is lead us to depend more on ourselves than on God.
