Read the Bible through in OneYear

"The people are stronger and taller than we are; the cities are large, with walls up to the sky. We even saw the Anakites there." Deuteronomy 1:28

Winston Churchhill once said, "You may take the most gallant sailor, the most intrepid airman, or the most audacious soldier, put them at a table together - what do you get? The sum of their fears."

There must have been some desire among the people to finally get to that land God had promised all of Abraham's children. After crossing the desert and barely escaping Pharoah's revenge, several men were sent into the enemy's land at Kadesh Barnea to spy on them. Some of the men were probably strong and capable soldiers who would be able to find weaknesses in the enemy's defenses.

You know the story (Read summary in Deuteronomy 1-2). Most of the spies came back to report to Moses that God must have been mistaken when he selected the land. Their doubt resulted in years of suffering and death in the desert until those who failed to believe God had died. Forty years later, their children would be given the same opportunity to believe God where their fathers had failed.

In a war against terrorism, President George W. Bush told Americans in a speech, "Freedom and fear are at war and freedom is winning." His statement may have been reassuring but anyone who has ever met fear on the battlefield and succommed, knows, its not over till it's over! Fear does not run and hide when overcome, but rather will raise its ugly head again and again to tirelessly tempt people to give up and surrender.

Understand the truth about fear; it is only the fear of God that can kill. All other fear is self-contrived illusion built on a refusal to trust God. Fighting fear in our own strength can be compared to a boxer swinging at a shadow.

Are you afraid of the dark? Timid about taking action on that which God leads you to do? Remember that a shadow is created when a light source behind you shows your own reflection against other objects. If you want to overcome fear, move in to the full light of God's presence and watch your enemy vanish right before your eyes.
