Read the Bible through in OneYear

Yesterday a glitch in the United States electrical grid triggered power outages from New England to Michigan making it the largest power blackout in American history. In the center of the affected area is New York City; no stranger to disaster since September 11, 2001. Thankfully, this current problem has only been one of inconvenience and loss of revenue thus far. Power can be expected to return within a matter of hours.

Since terrorists made a target of New York City as the hub of America's financial power, the first thought that ran through everyone's mind yesterday was that this problem was the result of another attack on America. It now seems that such fear isn't founded even though this event is a wake-up-call for something that should be anticipated, even expected.

But let's put this event in proper perspective, shall we? As a nation, we've been blessed above all others. Still, we demonstrate a national attitude of ingratitude and contempt toward the One who blessed us. It helps to keep this thing in proper focus: while we're worried about our comfort and a temporary loss inconvenience, people around the world have no electricity to turn on and knowledge they'll go to sleep at the end of the day still hungry.

As for our "war" on terrorism, Americans have fixated on a handful of religious fanatics who want attention, while ignoring greater threat. We puff out our chests and boast of our ability to stand at the same time we've turned our back on God who is able to snuff out our nation in a moment. He did it in Sodom, Gomorra, Jerusalem, Rome and he was about to do it to Nivevah until they repented and cried out to the Lord for forgiveness.

You might say we need adequate planning to prepare for an attack. I ask what planning can be made when Almighty God is against us? I love the verse in Psalms that David wrote: "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance." If you think that verse gives hope to America, think again. Americans, you need feel no guilt for serving other gods, it is God's people who are blessed, not you. The nation with the most Christians is likely the most blessed of all nations.

A time is coming when Christians can't be found on earth and nations will learn what David acknowledged: God's plan with be accomplished - no matter what comes. Yes, abundant planning and preparation may give us a warm and fuzzy feeling, but we'll discover that, like Adam the first man; we can run, but we can't hide from God.
