"So the Arameans were not willing to help the Ammonites anymore."
1 Chronicles 19:19b

Few people familiar with the word, "sovereignty," know what it means. That's because it goes against the grain of public opinion for one person or nation to do what seems right if that action is considered egregious by the majority of other people/nations. In other words, actions that affect others must be agreeable to them in order to get their "blessing." Hence, most nations today find security as a member in the United Nations organization, or the "UN" as it is commonly called.

Sovereignty is the willingness to stand alone on conviction and act in such a way it does not answer to lesser powers. That is, regardless of the cost, a sovereign nation does those things that benefit its people - regardless of the cost or popularity. Every nation was born sovereign, most in rebellion against their government, but all of them are willing to surrender their sovereignty if it means they can avoid being attacked by stronger nations and make financially beneficial agreements with others.

A lot of nations surrounded the nation Israel when David was king. And most of them believed the adage: "the enemy of my enemy is my friend." The Arameans agreed to attack Israel because another nation, namely the Ammonites, didn't like subjection to Israel either and they requested it.

The Arameans were optimistic at first, that is until Israel flexed their God-enabled muscle. Then they switched alliance and sought to befriend the ones they had been trying to kill. You may be wondering about the alliance between the Arameans and the Ammonites. Well, in today's vernacular, it went "south." A multi-nation alliance, whose allegiance is for sale, is no match for one sovereign nation under God, willing to die for what it believes.

We understand how a weak nation make an alliance with a stronger one for the benefit it gains. I can't imagine why the strongest nation on the face of the earth will surrender its power to a group of weaker nations and then have the audacity to call itself sovereign and under God.

To me such a nation violates the third of ten commandments that says, "You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name." Of course a nation would have to first recognize God's word as worthy of respect before they come to fear it, wouldn't they?
