Blessed is he who has regard for the weak; the Lord delivers him in times of trouble.
Psalm 41:1

My word processing program finds a problem with David's sentence structure. It suggests the word, "times" should be singular rather than plural. Well, I must respectfully disagree with Webster and side with David. If I am sure of anything, it's that my problems are plural and not singular.

I love this verse for it so easily lends itself to misinterpretation. Most of us like to view the promise as one delivered to the one who is weak, but read it more carefully and you'll see the promise is for the one who has regard for the weak, not necessarily weak himself. But what does it mean? How exactly can someone have regard for another person?

David could be called the protector of the weak and overlooked person, sometimes called the little guy or the underdog. Maybe it was his character, but regardless of why he did it, his prayer in Psalm 41 is his testimony for how God honored his attitude and blesses the person who cares for the weak.

God's word is as true today as it was for David in his day. But how many of us share his passion for caring for the little guy? I'm afraid most of us, if the truth were revealed, most of us would have the common world view, "Get all you can, can all you get, sit on the lid and poison the rest."

How does come to experience the passion of the man of God? Exactly, how can we "learn" to care for others when we are taught by the world to take care of ourselves first? It's easy when you stop and think about it, it's really quite easy. All we have to do is treat others the way God treats us. After all, aren't we weak and without God's grace and mercy headed for certain destruction?

Job said, "The groans of the dying rise from the city, and the souls of the wounded cry out for help." Aren't you glad you can share Job's hope by trusting God to hear you when you pray and deliver you by His grace?
