I will give them singleness of heart and action, so that they will always fear me for their own good and the good of their children after them.
Jeremiah 32:39

I apologize for the delay in posting today's devotional. There's been a lot of prayer needs this morning and yesterday the Internet was inaccessible. At this moment, Memphis Tennessee is under tornado warnings and the rain outside my office threatens to interrupt our power. So... we may not be able to complete the development of the devotional but we'll try.

Jeremiah is known as the weeping prophet because he showed great lament for his countrymen who turned from their faith in God. In fact, the book immediately following the Old Testament book named after him, is called Lamentations. Therein the prophet grieves for the loss of God's people, caused by their own neglect and stubbornness.

With that fact out of the way, we can now look at one of the greatest promises of God directed toward His children: "I will give them singleness of heart and action so they will always fear me" What a wonderful thought! Every Christian regardless of race, culture or background, standing together with locked arms to believe the word of God and determination to do what God says.

Here in the United States we're preparing to exercise our freedom to elect our next President. Judging from the previous election of four years ago, the votes that will be cast for the winner of the election will be only slightly more than those for the one who will lose. With two candidates of such radically different ideals, America is no doubt proving to be nation sharply divided, of different opinions and anything but having a singleness of heart and action.

When you stop and think about it, having different opinions is not what divides people. Instead, it is the stubbornness to repent when those ideas contradict Scriptural absolutes.

While our country may be divided politically, the real danger is not who will be elected next month, but how far we as Christians will swing from the truth of God's word. How far will we, as the family of God be divided on issues that are only controversial because some of us refuse to submit to the authority of God's word?

Listen, child of God. If you won't submit to God for your own good, won't you at least consider it for your children so they don't inherit your stupidity?
