But
you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah,
out of you will come for me one who who will be ruler over Israel. |

Prophecy is something said or written concerning the future. The word prophet means to speak or interpret. In Scripture, there were many people, forty-eight to be exact, who spoke something they claimed to have received from God about future events. How did people know for a fact that a prophet was really who he claimed? Well, that's easy; if everything they uttered had to be correct down to the smallest detail. Only then their message was worthy of consideration. There are at least thirty-eight predictions about the Messiah to come, which Jesus fulfilled to the smallest detail. In 1948, prophecy was fulfilled when Israel was recognized by the United Nations as a legitimate member of the world community. The little prophetic book of Micah tells us the place of the Messiah's birth there in Judah. Just consider the specific details of biblical prophecy. Messiah will come from the tribe of Judah, a descendant of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He will be heir to the throne of David and born of a virgin in Bethlehem at a specific time in history. He will survive a holocaust of infants and escape into Egypt just to emerge and begin ministry in Galilee as a prophet himself. He will be a priest of the highest order, but denied by the Jews. He will demonstrate Godly character, triumphantly enter Jerusalem on a donkey, be betrayed by a friend, sold for thirty pieces of silver that will be returned to purchase a potter's field. Many false witnesses will accuse Him, but He will be silent in the face of accusation. He will be spit upon and struck, mocked and insulted, hated without cause and suffer vicariously. He will be crucified with sinners where His hands, feet and side will be pierced without a single bone being broken. Gall and vinegar will be offered to him and He will hear prophecy as mockery while soldiers cast lots for his clothes. He will pray for his enemies, be buried in the borrowed tomb of a rich man, but after three days raised from the dead and later ascend to heaven to sit at the right hand of God. We tend to dismiss the incredible scientific evidence that Jesus is who He says He is. Just the fact that every biblical prophecy has been fulfilled is incredible enough. But ask yourself this: what if only those who never missed the ball were allowed to play baseball? Or what if only those who never committed a foul and made every shot they made from the basketball court were allowed to play? If perfection is what you demand, then Scripture will be the only perfect thing you ever experience in this life. And the only purpose of Scripture is to reveal Jesus Christ, Messiah, King of Kings, Lord of Lords and most importantly, Savior. But the most incredible prophecy is that many will deny and reject Messiah, even though He satisfied every prophecy to the smallest detail. Jesus claimed to be Messiah and proved it. Now, you know WHO He is; do you KNOW Him?
