But
Essau ran to meet Jacob and embrace him; he threw his arms around his
neck and kissed him.

There's something we should all learn about fear. For example, today I have all the classic signs of classic fear; despair, depression and despondency. Little has changed since yesterday, but last night I thought of all sorts of negative things that could happen today. I've made mistakes in the past and will likely make more in the future, but in Christ I have the assurance that even my problems will work out for my good. But now, I must either face my fear or let it manipulate my actions. Jacob made his share of mistakes too. One of them was to trick his brother and steal something very important from him. Then, rather than deal with his deception, Jacob ran away and didn't come back for years. One can only imagine the fear he had knowing what his brother would do to him when they met again. But when they met a funny thing happened. Essau had dealt with his anger and forgave Jacob. But Jacob never dealt with his fear until fear led him to alter his life. Jacob missed years of being with his family and who knows what else. Please don't misunderstand me. Sometimes bad things are waiting for us just around the corner. And not everyone will forgive and embrace us as Essau did for his brother. But those of us who've found forgiveness for sin through Jesus Christ have been reconciled to God and whatever fear we have should be balanced with trust that God is on our side and most importantly, is our Brother who wants to restore us if we run away and hide. Have you found the peace in Jesus that turns fear into trust? I plan to face my fear today with eyes wide open, thanking God for the opportunity to live and trust his grace. It also helps that I've learned through the years that the things are seldom as bad as fear makes it look.
