When Philip was in Samaria, he was told by an angel to go south toward Jerusalem, particularly along the road between the city and Gaza. Philip wasn't given much information about his mission, but it was so important an angel was sent to give him special instructions. Along the way, Philip encountered an Ethiopian who needed help understanding Scripture. At the right place and at the right time, Philip revealed Christ to the man and then subsequently baptized him. There is much about this incident that is remarkable, but none more than the fact after Philip went where he was directed and after the Ethiopian was saved, an angel miraculously took him and placed him somewhere else. We don't know where exactly, but I wouldn't be surprised to find out he was put back on his previous path to continue his work. That experience no doubt put spring in Philip's step for the rest of his life. Like me and hearing this, you probably focused on the call, enpowerment and transport of the preacher Philip. But look at this from the viewpoint of the Ethiopian. He needed help to understand Scripture and probably didn't pray (even if he knew how) before God sent someone to present the gospel to him. Then as he came up out of the baptismal waters, the missionary suddenly disappeared into thin air. Scripture says the Ethipoian went on his way rejoicing. I imagine he gave his personal testimony to everyone he met, telling them exactly what happened on the Gaza road that day. After having celebrated Thanksgiving Day, most of the world now anticipates Christmas, the day the birth of Jesus and man's redemption is celebrated. But have you considered that we're very similar to the Ethiopian? We were in the dark and without light when God sent his Son to reveal the Father's glory. A Star out of Jacob, a Scepter that rose from Israel came in obedience and did what no one else could and then was suddenly taken from us. Philip one time asked Jesus, "Lord, we don't know where you're going, so how can we know the way?" On the Gaza road a few years later, Philip proved he'd learned the Way. I pray you have as well. His Name is Jesus and he is the answer you need even though you might not be able to ask the right question. (John 14:5-7)
