Live it
Sometimes you look around and wonder how you got where you are. Such was the case when I ventured away from a small but functioning business to start another one from scratch. It was thirty years ago when my new bride, Dianne and I took a night class together to learn how to frame pictures. We found the process enjoyable and since I was already a professional photographer, we decided to open a business on Avon in Memphis to do both things for a living.

Just as today, it's love that gives us strength and happiness. But positioned between a bakery and flower shop with the constant smell of flowers, donuts and cream icing, it was enough to drive anyone crazy. Add to that the fact we didn't have a day off for two years and every weekend spent taking high-pressure wedding portraits for very little money, we were ready for a new plan.

You might say we owned that business, but looking back, I recognize the business really owned us. Anytime you go where other people take you and do what obligation makes you do, at the speed others want you to go, you are not in charge. In Egypt, Jacob thought things were good until the person who gave him stuff, showed up later to tell his family how much servitude he demanded for delaying repossession. Truth is, in Christ we're heirs to everything on earth, but until he takes his throne, we will never own that which we have title, regardless who gives it to us or how much we pay for it.

Pray it
The only thing I own sometime is an ungrateful spirit and the only debt I owe is to You, not man and certainly not possessions. Forgive me for accumulating things and doing what I must to keep them. As owner of nothing, I thank you, who is and has everything, for trusting me to take care of Your stuff.
