Live it
I would have never believed there would come a time when I would go an entire season without picking up my golf clubs. But with things the way they are, my schedule just doesn't allow for giving up daylight hours for recreation. That's such a contrast because there have been times in my life when I played several times a week. I'd played so much in fact, one time I had aspiration of playing professionally. One thing is true for golf that's true

with most anything, the more you practice, the better you get. On one occasion, having played near par, I felt ready to test my skills against other aspiring golfers, so I signed up for a tournament.

Having played at Fox Meadows a few times before and feeling somewhat confident, I thought I could benefit by being around others who saw themselves as I saw myself. But, reality struck home on day one of the match. Not only did I play poorly, I discovered there were rules concerning where you hit your ball after driving off the tee box into the water. On one particular hole, I drove the ball in the water at least three times before accidentally landing in the fairway. I showed up the next morning to play the second round, but coming in last and having your previous day's triple-digit score published in the newspaper, I was embarassed. The clincher however, came when I overheard a conversation between a wife and her husband at the clubhouse. "I should have signed up to play, honey. Looking at this one guy's score, at least I wouldn't have come in last." Having my dreams and aspiration shattered that way, I left and didn't even show for my tee time. I guess I feared allowing her or anyone else to attach my face to their feelings of superiority.

Pray it
Were I to have played that round yesterday, I would play today, if for no other reason than to finish what I started, and demonstrate how a Christian is supposed to deal with disappointment. Maybe I learned something after all!
