| Live it.. Everyone who's attended public school might remember reading a book entitled Silas Marner. Some might recall what it was about and a few might even recall the name of the author as George Elliot. What you may not know however, is that George's real name is Mary Anne Evans (22 November 1819 – 22 December 1880). That's right, George Elliot was a pen name used by Mary Anne so her work would be taken seriously. She tried using Marian Evans, but that didn't work, so the male pseudo name of George was created. We know she lived during a time women generally weren't regarded as serious authors. Mary Anne's strategy must have worked because Silas Marner is required reading one hundred years later. |

I've always enjoyed a story about someone who was considered a nobody before being recognized as a somebody. To prove my point, I'm not nearly as impressed with Silas as I am with Mary Anne. Refreshing my memory about the story of Silas however, I now see what probably escaped me as a teenager. The main character in her book seems to be in defense of her own questionable lifestyle and attitude about religion. Sorry, Mary Anne, you had me with the pen name thing, but I can't give you a pass for your life choices. Creating an artifiicial name however, sounds as exciting as writing a book and giving him (or her) credit. Pray it Resources 1. One-minute
