Live it..
I can't imagine what it was like for my dad to lose both of his legs in a railroad accident. Since it happened when I was a toddler, I don't remember him any other way. You might think he lost his independence with the accident, but he didn't. Case in point, he either got around in his wheelchair, or by using his arms and hands to swing his body along the ground. A friend recently reminded me of our old Nash Rambler that was equipped with a hand device on the steering wheel. I'm certain most people driving the streets of Memphis didn't know he was accelerating and braking without any legs. He loaded his wheelchair in the driver's side floor and then pulled himself to the driver's seat. When he arrived at his destination, he would reverse the procedure. If my dad had a negative side, it was probably his short-fused temper. |

I remember walking into the kitchen and my dad was sitting at the table. He said something to me and I responded in less than a respectful way from the other side of the table. He immediately released the brake lever on his wheel chair, pushed back from the table and turned to come after me. But, being the fleet-footed young kid I was, my dad was no match for my illusiveness. He went one way around the table and I went another. The angrier he got, the more I laughed, until I was looking at him behind me and ran into my mom. Man, did I get it! She later told my wife she used the closest thing she could find to spank me, a girdle hanging to dry in the hallway. I wish I could say I didn't inherit my father's temper, but some of our old neighbors still remember hearing my voice two blocks away when my children acted in disrespect as I had done earlier. Like father, like son, I guess.
Pray it
Thank you for loving me in spite of my sinful characteristics, for loving me the way I am, but too much to leave me that way.
