This is the time of year some students choose teachers for certain subjects in school. They might have heard from friends or older siblings that some are harder than others. Or they might have personally experienced the teacher in a different subject and liked them. But few students choose the ones known for being difficult. That is, unless they are forced to do so, because they were late registering. Then again, you might not know anything about a particular teacher so you choose them without knowing their reputation. Enter my biology teacher in college.

Being a teacher myself, but not in secular education, I know something about technique. I understand sometimes the shocking statement method gets the student's attention. That's when you begin by stating something untrue as true. Then, after a long pause and seeing raised hands, you allow students to introduce the subject with varying opinions. A good teacher then admits his shocking statement was a lie and begins instruction. Most can identify with this, but many will identify with something else. That's when a teacher not only fails to reject his false statement but tries to convince everyone to believe it, making those who disagree an object of ridicule and scorn. They may not intend to do so, but they quickly reveal a proper name for their class, Social Activism 101. That's where grades are commensurate with agreement with the teacher rather than established fact. Welcome students to education in the new and "changed" America.
