Faces & places
Last night was another time for me and some friends to gather at a home to break bread and pray. Ever since the First Century, believers have done this and its becoming more popular. But meeting together for Tuesday night "church" does not substitute for our meeting on Sunday with a larger group of believers. In our case, we represent two different congregations and our Thursday morning prayer meeting of men represent several congregations of believers. While our smaller meetings could provide an alternative to a large assembly of the church, they actually represent an ancillary service. But the church is the church, no matter when and where we believers choose to meet.
Brick and mortar has its place, but a church building is a temporary structure. On the other hand, frequently meeting in the home of a believer is flexible and with proper leadership is all that's needed. Of course, the government that is becoming increasingly more hostile towards Christianity opposes anything they can't contain and control, like private homes. Home churches also find opposition from professional ministers who lead large congregations in brick and mortar structures. Those two sources of resistance alone provide evidence home churches were right in the First Century and they are right for this one, possibly the Last Century church.
God, I look forward to assembling with people who know You like I do.
