Today's Scripture: "Evil shall slay the wicked, and those who hate the righteous shall be condemned." Ps 34:21
5708. Addiction is dependence on anyone or anything other than God. JG
Pick a side
I learned yesterday that after two years of preaching Jesus at Salvation Army, my role has expanded. I am now being asked to include discussion of chemical addiction in my teaching. After revealing the fact I've never been chemically dependent and feel naked speaking to a room full of addicts, I asked if that would be a problem. I was told it would not and to speak of the subject from a biblical perspective. In case you're wondering, neither the word "chemical" nor the word "addiction" shows up in a translation biblical index. I will deliver my first sermon on the subject next Tuesday night when I normally teach men the proper role Scripture should play in their life..
After overcoming the initial shock of hearing my assignment, it is all very clear this morning. The simple fact is that more people than you think are addicted to something, but few, if any, admit the fact. It's not that they feel guilty about it, but they simply fail to see it as a problem. Sadly who and what is negatively affected by their abuse doesn't matter. Self-indulgence is too kind a word for someone who expects the innocent to pay for their sin.
Forgive us, Your people, God, for thinking we're something and deserving of anything good.
