When we joined Crossroads Baptist church, my wife and I sought a place to use our musical talent. For several years we've supported family by attending contemporary churches that use guitars, drums and small praise team in lieu of a choir. All God-honoring music is good, but for someone who views quiet music as a threshold to prayer, you might say I've been in church and dying of thirst at the same time. When my wife told me she no longer had the desire to sing, it was time to pick up and move.
Without knowing how long we will be at this church, we are blessed to not only get to know Jim Whitmire but enjoy his legacy. That's because we ministered in small churches in around Memphis for all the time Jim served the people of the megachurch, Bellevue Baptist. My congregations were so small I'd have to lead the choir and sing the missing men's part in our choir specials. We only visited Bellevue through the years to see their Christmas and Passion plays of which we are now part.
Yesterday our pastor asked our worship leader and his support team to stand in the center of the church he calls the "crossing," for prayer. Time was frozen for a moment as I embraced what I'd experienced from afar in the past. This time we share the memory and look forward to many more.
Thank You, Lord, for those I've led and those who've helped me do it.
